April will be a musical month!
On April 7th, special guest Tobias Emanuel Mayer, German singer, songwriter, and pianist will be attending Ekphrasis and performing for about 15-20 minutes. He will share a few piano pieces and perhaps a song in English just for us. He will also talk a little bit about himself, his faith, and his music. We will begin the evening with a writing workshop on sentence stylistics, then Tobias will share. After that, we will spend the rest of the evening in our ordinary share-and-critique workshop.
On April 14th, Nadine Kulberg, mezzo-soprano and voice teacher, will offer a special Extra Ephrasis Event: a workshop on singing! This entire evening will be a masterclass on placement, resonance, projection, and whatever other vocal needs you have. Please come prepared with a short song or selection (under 2 min.) to perform and plan to sing in ensemble with everyone else present.
On May 5th, Mahlika Hopwood, Medievalist, scholar, teacher, and PhD candidate at Fordham University, will speak to us about Medieval religious literature. Again, we will begin the evening with a writing workshop, then Mahlika will talk to us for about 20 minutes and take questions. After that, we will spend the rest of the evening in our ordinary share-and-critique workshop.
A note about these three events. These professional musicians/scholars, Tobias, Nadine, and Mahlika, are each traveling from New York City and sharing their time and expertise with us. I would like to reimburse them for these expenses, so I will be taking small donations before and during the events. Plan on contributing if possible.
Stay tuned for info about another movie discussion evening. Meanwhile, if you want to post your work on this blog, please send it my way.
In other news, be sure to mark your calendars for Northampton Community College’s performance of Macbeth (in which one of our members plays a Witch) and Players of the Stage’s production of Midsummer Night’s Dream in May (directed by an Ekphrasian; other members of Ekphrasis are assistance directing, providing costumes, acting, etc).
