“Ekphrasis,” in its most narrow sense, is a written description of a work of visual art. In its broader application, Ekphrasis refers to any art directly responding to another work in a different genre or medium. I have appropriated this term for use as the name of my fellowship of Christians in the Arts, located in Allentown, PA. I have taken the word to mean the description, or even translation, of experiences — especially spiritual encounters — into art.
Ekphrasis is a gathering of Christians who do art — any kind of art. We have writers (poetry and prose), actors, musicians, photographers, painters, composers, and people in film. We come together to share our original work and performances and to critique what is shared. These meetings are always very lively, full of fantastic conversation and good, solid advice for revision and improvement. On this blog, we post reports of the meetings and original work for critique.
I have a high standard of quality and attempt to impart that to the participants. Please check out the Vision Statement in the sidebar. If you live in Eastern PA and would like to participate, please attend!. Leave a comment here or email iambic[dot]admonit[at]gmail[dot]com.
